COVID-19 rapid test appointment platform

We delivered a stable, reliable, and scalable platform that efficiently managed COVID-19 rapid test appointments. Our agile approach enabled us to complete the project swiftly and effectively.

The client 

The Centrum voor Leerlingenbegeleiding (CLB) is an institution that partners with every accredited school in Flanders (Belgium) to support students with learning, studying, and their psychological and social well-being. 

Client Challenge    

When Belgian students started their school year during COVID-19, they needed access to rapid COVID-19 tests. And, the CLB needed access to the test results to support the students. The Red Cross administered these tests, but there was no online system for booking appointments. Each testing center had its operating hours, break times, locations, and number of volunteers, all of which varied daily based on availability.

The solution

The final product was delivered quickly to address the urgent pandemic situation. The Red Cross could adjust volunteer assignments based on appointment bookings, customize appointment calendars, and manage appointments efficiently through the platform.

After the appointments, results were entered and automatically visible to CLB employees. Due to its success and reliability, we expanded the platform to include school staff, allowing them to schedule their COVID-19 rapid tests. Given that each center had its working hours, break times, locations, and volunteer numbers, we introduced a “load factor” to determine how many rapid tests each center could perform within 15 minutes. For better flexibility, we included the option to input exceptional working hours for each day. This allowed Red Cross centers to effectively manage fluctuations in staff availability.

Tech solution

Spring Boot was our backend framework of choice, and Angular was the best fit as a frontend solution. The application was deployed onto Amazon (AWS) servers.
